Who can learn to knit? You don't have to be a girl or a woman to learn to knit. Men and boys can knit. Knitting takes some manual dexterity, some handiness with the muscles in your hands, but that dexterity is not limited to women.
Why should I learn to knit?
Satisfaction--There is a satisfaction in creating an object from a ball of yarn.
Calm--Sitting down to knit can help you achieve a state of calm.
Time to think and reflect--Taking a break from work and busyness by sitting down to knit can help you relax, empty your mind, and reflect thoughtfully on what you have done or what you aim to do.
Patience--When you have to be present somewhere, but are not actively participating in an activity, knitting can help you feel at ease with the situation. These situations can range from the need to lightly supervise young children, to sitting through a long meeting.
How can I get started? What supplies do I need? You only need a pair of needles and some yarn. This is all, but both come in many styles and sizes, so you need a combination that goes well together.
I aim to help you become a self-reliant and confident knitter. If you have a friend to help and advise you, that is all the better. But I aim to tell you what you need to know to get started and to advance all on your own. If you are a beginner, the pages of this website are arranged in this order:
Getting Started which will help you choose yarn and needles
Step One, Cast on which will explain how to form a first row of loops on a needle
Step Two, the Knit Stitch will explain how to form the basic stitch in knitting.
Step Three, the Purl Stitch will explain how to form a stitch from the other side, with the yarn on the side toward you.
Step Four, Cast off will explain how to finish your knitting, to secure the stitches so they do not unravel.
